Dear list members,
We are proud to announce the publication of a new paper giving an
overview of the work to date in the OpenWorm project:
Szigeti B, Gleeson P, Vella M, Khayrulin S, Palyanov A, Hokanson J,
Currie M, Cantarelli M, Idili G and Larson S (2014). *OpenWorm: an
open-science approach to modelling Caenorhabditis elegans*. Frontiers in
Computational Neuroscience

The OpenWorm project <http://www.openworm.org/science.html> is a unique
experiment in open science with the aim of creating a computational
model of the nematode C. elegans which incorporates unprecedented levels
of biological and physical detail. The model will be freely available as
open source software from the start and will incorporate known details
of the neuronal and muscular systems as well as an advanced fluid
mechanics simulation engine for body-environment interactions.
The work is carried out by an international team of neuroscientists and
computer programmers, mostly on a voluntary basis. A successful
Kickstarter funding campaign in May 2014 is accelerating the goal of
making this model accessible to anyone through their web browser.
For anyone *in the London area**on 6th November*, there will be a public
presentation of OpenWorm at UCL
<https://plus.google.com/events/cvp58gp0s3er8t8g9756k6vn0u4>. This will
outline the aims of the project, the resources which are currently
available and future plans for the initiative.
After the presentation there will be an open discussion session where
the OpenWorm Core Team will be present to answer any questions related
to the project, to help with installing the software produced by the
initiative, or to discuss incorporating your experimental data into the
model.
