Postdoc Position
Center for Image Sciences
University Medical Center Utrecht
Netherlands
The University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU) has an open position for a postdoctoral fellow within one of the high- profile Brain Initiative research programs. In this multicenter program the relationship between neuronal and neurovascular responses to stimuli is investigated in great detail, in both animals and human subjects. The main goal of the program is to improve our understanding of the neuronal principles that drive the fMRI BOLD signal, using multiple imaging modalities in the same subjects and developing mathematical models to capture those principles. The program will host 8 postdocs and multiple principal investigators in The Netherlands (Utrecht) and the US (New York).
The UMCU is a large academic hospital with over 12000 employees and with strong research and education programs in imaging and neuroscience. Two centers of the UMCU are participating in the project: The Center of Image Sciences and the Brain Center Rudolf Magnus. NYU is a world-known institution for systems neuroscience, computational neuroscience, and cognitive neuroscience. The Center for Brain Imaging and the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center (CEC) at NYU Langone Medical Center are participating in the project. The UMCU and NYU CEC are ones of the largest centers in the Netherlands and US, respectively, to perform electrode implantations in the human brain.
Project Description
The postdoc will be responsible for modeling the cortical vasculature and hemodynamics that underlie the fMRI signal at the UMC Utrecht. The project will involve the validation of detailed vascular/hemodynamic models in the rodent brain, and translation and expansion of the models to the human brain. Model predictions will be tested with measurements performed in both rodents and humans and will involve optical imaging and high field (f)MRI, therefore providing empirical data for modeling and validation. He/she will focus on modeling and collaborate with other researchers of the program who are responsible for data acquisition and analysis, and will work in the research team of Dr. Petridou. The Postdoc is expected to interact closely with other fMRI researchers, modelers, and electrophysiology experts, to contribute to the construction of advanced high-level models.
Profile of the candidate
The candidate has completed a PhD in biomedical engineering, computer science, computational neuroscience, mathematics or a related discipline relevant for the development and implementation of models. The candidate will have conducted neuroscience research with an emphasis on modeling the biological signals, and has published in this field. Experience in programming (Matlab, IDL or equivalent language) is a must. Experience in fMRI or optical imaging is a benefit but not a requirement provided the candidate is motivated to learn.
What we offer
We offer the candidate an inspiring, high quality research environment, with a focus on human brain function and state of the art imaging capabilities (7T/9.4T (f)MRI, high-density ECoG, human and small animal optical imaging) in a medical environment with a clear mandate to improve methodology and technology. Within the program the team will interact closely with the team in New York, to achieve a common goal.
What we expect
The candidate has the capacity and motivation to coordinate the modeling of cortical hemodynamics endeavor in Utrecht and is willing to work with human and rodent multi-modal (fMRI and optical imaging) data. He/she proactively contributes to the planning and decision making in research strategy, and actively maintains collaboration within the Utrecht team and with the New York team. The candidate has excellent social skills and is a team player.
Contact
For further information please contact Natalia Petridou: N.Petridou at umcutrecht.nl<mailto:N.Petridou at umcutrecht.nl>
The appointment is for four years. Initially, the candidate will be appointed for one year followed by an evaluation after which the contract is extended. Applications should be sent by email to Dr. Petridou and should include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae including a publication list, and references of at least two people applicants have worked with.
