[HBP Curriculum]

On 18  September 2019, the HBP Education Programme will organise a workshop on ICT for non-specialists at the Technical University Munich under the title “Spiking neural networks: Applications to computing, algorithmics, and robotics”.

Participation in the event is open to the entire scientific community, but especially targets early-career researchers (advanced Master’s students, PhD students and early postdocs).

In order to reach many interested students and young researchers, we kindly ask you to include our workshop in your scientific events calendar or share via your communication channels.

The HBP Curriculum on Interdisciplinary Brain Science <https://www.humanbrainproject.eu/en/education/participatecollaborate/curriculum/> combines web-based distance learning courses and complementary face-to-face workshops. It provides basic lessons in the Human Brain Project (HBP) core fields neuroscience, medicine and ICT for early-career researchers outside their area of specialisation, as well as courses on the subjects of ethics and intellectual property rights, translation and exploitation of research.

SPIKING NEURAL NETWORKS: APPLICATIONS TO COMPUTING, ALGORITHMICS, AND ROBOTICS

Spiking neural networks (SNN) are a special class of artificial neural networks (ANN), in which the information is transmitted by means of pulses (or spikes) rather than by firing rates. As SNNs have shown to be excellent control systems for biological organisms, they have the potential to produce good control systems for autonomous robots. This workshop aims to bring together neuroscientists with roboticists and computational researchers developing biologically-inspired learning algorithms for scientific and industrial applications.

In order to enrich the discussions of SNN and its applications to computing, algorithmics and robotics, we will have a hands-on session on spiking neural networks on the Neurorobotics Platform (HBP SP10).

The programme will combine lectures in the morning and hands-on sessions in the afternoon. The sessions will finish around 3:30 p.m. to allow participants to also attend the IEEE International Conference on Cyborg and Bionic Systems <http://cbs2019.com/>.

Application information

Application is open to the entire student community and early-career researchers, regardless of whether they are affiliated with the Human Brain Project or not. It is aimed to offer equal opportunities for all early-career researchers regardless of gender, age, origin, etc.

Participation fee: 90 €

The fee does not include travel and accommodation. Fees will be collected after participants have been selected.

Registration fee waivers are available for a maximum of five participants. Participants can apply for fee waivers prior to the application deadline by sending an email to curriculum.edu at humanbrainproject.eu <mailto:curriculum.edu at humanbrainproject.eu>.

Please also check with your supervisor how your institution can support you with regard to expenses for the attendance of the workshops.
