Title: Fully-funded PhD/Postdoc position in
Detecting Visual Impairments from Everyday Gaze Behavior
Location: LMU Munich, Germany
Start date: March 2019 or later
================================================================
Applicants are invited to apply for a PhD/Postdoc position in the Human-Centered Ubiquitous Media group (LMU Munich), that will be supervised by Dr. Lewis Chuang. The positions are fully-funded according to the German public service payscale (TV-L 13, 100%).
-- Project --
The successful candidate will work within a multi-partner project, involving medical institutions and industry partners, that is motivated to diagnose, rehabilitate, and provide assistance to individuals with progressive visual impairments (i.e., age-related macular degneration; AMD). The successful candidate will investigate how AMD modifies natural gaze behavior and how this could be recognized from gaze tracking data acquired under real world conditions. This project will contribute to our current understanding of natural gaze behavior as well as provide insight into the daily difficulties experienced by AMD sufferers. The successful candidate will have access to advanced eye- and motion-tracking equipment, a psychophysical laboratory, state-of-the-art computing facilities, and the opportunity to contribute to the design of assistive technologies.
-- Candidate Profile --
The successful candidate should have a Master’s or doctoral degree in psychology, neuroscience, computer science, and/or a related field. In particular, the applicant should demonstrate previous experience in computer vision, machine learning, and/or vision science—or, in case of a doctoral candidate, the ability to acquire relevant skills within the first six months of their PhD. The applicant should demonstrate programming proficiency (i.e., C#, C/C++, Java, Python, Matlab), ideally for the statistical modeling and analyses of large datasets. They should be willing to perform experiments with human participants. Proficiency in English is a prerequisite, proficiency in German desired, but not required. LMU Munich is an equal opportunity employer.
-- Research Group --
The interdisciplinary Human-Centered Ubiquitous Media group consists of an international team of computer scientists, engineers, neuroscientists, and psychologists. It is dedicated to developing wearable and ubiquitous technologies that mitigate human errors, augment user performance and well-being, and amplifies human cognition. Past projects include context-aware applications, AR for manual assembly tasks, physiological evaluations of human-machine interactions, and more.
LMU Munich is consistently ranked #1 among German universities and #32 world-wide by Times Higher Education (in 2018). The Institute for Informatics has a strong focus on human-computer interaction with three professors and approximately 40 research scientists in media informatics.
-- Your application --
Please send the following documents to Dr. Tonja Machulla (tonja.machulla at ifi.lmu.de): a cover letter detailing any previous research and project development experience, a CV, Bachelor/Master certificates and transcripts, and 1-2 academic references. Applications will be considered until the position is filled.
